Nikki M. James and Rory O’Malley Returning to ‘The Book of Mormon’

Original Broadway cast members Nikki M. James and Rory O’Malley will return to “The Book of Mormon” for a limited 12-week engagement this fall.

James and O’Malley will begin performances October 27 at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre and remain with the production through January 17, 2027. James will reprise her Tony Award-winning role as Nabulungi, while O’Malley will return to the role of Elder McKinley, for which he received a Tony nomination. The characters are currently played by Sydney Quildon and Charlie Franklin, respectively.

“Returning to ‘The Book of Mormon’ feels like a true homecoming,” James said in a statement.

The actor added that returning alongside O’Malley gives her another opportunity to revisit the role that changed her career while working with members of the musical’s current company.

“Getting to perform as Elder McKinley again is a dream come true,” O’Malley said.

The upcoming engagement follows appearances by both actors during the production’s Magical Mormon Mystery Week in June. That event brought members of the original and current Broadway companies together for a series of performances celebrating the musical’s 15th anniversary.

“The Book of Mormon” follows two mismatched missionaries sent to Uganda, where their attempts to gain converts lead them to adjust their approach and teachings. The musical features a book, music and lyrics by Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Robert Lopez.

Parker co-directed the production with Casey Nicholaw, who also choreographed the show. “The Book of Mormon” won nine Tony Awards in 2011, including Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical.

The production opened at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre in March 2011 and has become the longest-running show in the venue’s history. It also remains among the longest-running musicals currently playing on Broadway.
